The Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Buti Manamela, launched the Heritage Careers Expo 2021 on 06 May 2021 at the Mapungubwe World Heritage Site in Limpopo. The Heritage Careers Expo is a flagship project of the Department of Higher Education Science and Innovation and is supported by various higher education institutions including 5 SETAs. The Expo seeks to showcase the various career opportunities available that are aligned with our heritage under the theme “Unlocking the wealth in our heritage”. The month-long Expo included roundtable discussions, masterclasses, as well as behind-the-scene interviews with industry experts and professionals who shared their knowledge and experiences with the learners. The Services SETA invited its stakeholders to share their industry experiences on haircare, beauty and funeral services as the key subsectors within the SETA that support the heritage industry. Make-up and haircare, for example, is a big part of the South African heritage and has been part of our cultural identity since time immemorial. They are also elements of identity and personal branding that are popular with performing artists to distinguish themselves from rivals. The manner in which we conduct our burials for our loved ones is also a core part of our culture and heritage which has been passed one from generation to generation. As part of the Expo, the Services SETA did behind the scenes shoots with entrepreneurs and owners of beauty spas, hairdressers and funeral parlours. The interviews give a perspective about the beauty, haircare and funeral sectors and the opportunities these industries have to offer our youth.
